Scope and Contents: Publications is an artificial grouping of University of Michigan-Dearborn publications. They are gathered here for the convenience of description. They have been divided into six types of publications: ADMINISTRATIVE, COMMENCEMENT, HONORS, LITERARY, NEWS, and PUBLICATIONS BY FACULTY AND STAFF.
ADMINISTRATIVE publications include bulletins describing course offerings such as the university Announcement, 1959-1983 (Boxes 1-2), the Graduate Announcement, 1984-1988, and 1992/94 (box 2), and the Undergraduate Announcement, 1983-1993, box 3. For other brochures and announcements see box 20, 21, 22. The Faculty-Staff Directory, 1972-1995 (boxes 3-4, 2-, 24), and Student Directory, 1960-1993 scattered (box 5) are included in this series. There is also an incomplete run of the publication From the Chancellor's Desk from 1972 through 1995 (boxes 6-7). Chancellors’ inaugurations (box 21). The researcher should consult the Chancellor’s Office record group for full coverage. Budget reports, 1996-2002 (boxes 18, 19, 24). The COMMENCEMENT publications are the programs handed out at graduation. There is only one commencement program found in this series--Winter 1968 (box 7). See the Chancellor’s Office for complete coverage of Commencements.
The HONORS publications are the programs given at the Honors Convocation in Ann Arbor. There is a separate listing for University of Michigan-Dearborn honors students in this publication (box 7).
The LITERARY PUBLICATIONS (boxes 7, 8) include the Literary Arts Journal, published from 1971 through 1981, and Lyceum, which was first issued in 1982. There is a nearly complete run of these publications through 1994. The researcher will also find four issues (1976-1978) of Philosophy and Literature in this series.
The NEWS PUBLICATIONS includes Ad Hoc, a student newspaper which was published from 1964 through 1972 (box 10). In 1972 the name was changed to The Michigan Journal, (The Journal from 1981-1983). There is a nearly complete run of this publication from 1972 through 1994 (boxes 11-17); ask about more recent issues). Prior to Ad Hoc there were other newspapers published. These include The Fairlane (1962) and The Dearborn Wolverine (1963) (box 9) [missing 09-02]. A complete run of the Reporter (faculty and staff news) are available in the records of the Office of University Relations; 1997 to present is also available in the Publications collection in the Reading Room.
There were at least two African-American newspapers published on the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus (box 10). There are two issues of the Black Emblem published in 1975. This series includes one issue of The Heritage produced in 1976.
PUBLICATIONS BY THE FACULTY AND STAFF (box 9) are books written by the staff of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. These include a volume of the collected writings of Eugene Arden, who served as provost of the university, a volume entitled State Policies and Higher Education by Leonard E. Goodall, the first chancellor of the university, and Connections: Faculty Voices which includes articles written by several faculty members and edited by Ted-Larry Pebworth and Claude Summers in honor of the inauguration of Chancellor James Renick in 1994.
