Scope and Contents: Herschel Wallace served the University of Michigan-Dearborn not only as Registrar, but also as director of Student Affairs, and director of the oral history program. As an early driving force in the movement to establish an archives at the University of Michigan-Dearborn many of the records of the Office of Registration and Records were saved, though not organized.
The Office of Registration and Records group has been divided into four series: CORRESPONDENCE FILES, TOPICAL FILES, PUBLICATIONS, and ADMISSIONS OFFICERS.
The CORRESPONDENCE FILES (Box 1-2) are broken down into two subseries: Chronological and Topical. The Chronological series contains six folders dated from 1960-1985. The Topical series includes three folders which contain correspondence discussing the issue of registration between the Ann Arbor and Dearborn campuses from 1972 to 1974, space needs, and student withdrawals.
The TOPICAL FILES (Box 2-12) series contains records on committees such as the Campus Matriculant Students Subcommittee from 1978, Committee on Admission Data for 1961, the Fee Committee from 1971 through 1979, and the Scholarship Committee dating from 1962 through 1967. These committee records are filed under the general heading “committees” rather than the individual name of each committee. The University of Michigan Dearborn began to automate registration in the mid-1960’s through the mid 1970’s. The records documenting this process will be found under the heading “Data Processing.”
There are numerous reports issued by the Office of Registration and Records describing the student by class distribution, sex, marital status, and ethnicity. Foreign student reports will also be found in this series.
The PUBLICATIONS (Box 12-15) series under the heading “Reports” includes the 1971 issue of Degrees and Awards Conferred, 1845-1970 by the University of Michigan. This publication includes graduates from the Dearborn campus as well as the Ann Arbor campus. There are sixteen volumes of the Report of the Office of Registration and Records, from 1958/59 through 1965/66, and Report of the Office of the Registrar, from 1965/66-1974/75. “Schedules” include the Time Schedule from 1959 through 1974 and Schedule of Classes from 1975 through 1994. The time schedules are not complete for each year, however.
The MICHIGAN ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGIATE REGISTRARS AND ADMISSIONS OFFICERS (Box 16-17) is the final series in this record group. Herschel Wallace served as an officer in this organization for many years. It includes interesting comparison information between the various colleges and universities in the state.
