Office of Research and Sponsored Programs | University of Michigan-Dearborn Archives
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs was formerly the Office of Sponsored Research and Grant Administration, and formerly the Office of Sponsored Research and Development, as well as Office of Development.
The university began to do some external fund raising with the appointment in March 1975 of Dr. Lee Katz as first Associate Dean for Development and Research Support. Katz also coordinated evening programs, but by 1978 worked fulltime on development, as Dean of Development in the Office of Development. This office dealt with sponsored research and special projects, alumni development, and state relations. 1978 was the first year in which more than one million dollars was raised in outside funding for faculty research, and other academic activities. Katz left the university in July 1981. Susan Burt was appointed by Chancellor William Jenkins (1980-1988) in June 1982 as director of Sponsored Research and Development. She was promoted to Associate Vice-Chancellor for Sponsored Research and Development in 1985, making her the highest-ranking woman on the campus. Dr. Drew Buchanan was named director of Sponsored Research & Grant Administration Aug. 1, 1990, and continues as director of Research and Sponsored Programs to the present.
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs assists UM-Dearborn faculty and staff prepare and submit proposals for sponsored programs (commonly called "grants and contracts"). ORSP is the point of contact and co-ordination for all grant matters on the Dearborn campus and is the liaison between faculty and staff, external sponsors, and administrative offices in Ann Arbor. ORSP also administers internal grants in support of research and scholarship for faculty and students and discretionary support to stimulate external funding. (ORSP Web Site)
