Student Government | University of Michigan-Dearborn Archives
“SG" is an acronym for Student Government, the student governing body for all students at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. SG is comprised of an Executive Board (also known as the E-Board), which is comprised of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and the Director of Clubs and Organizations. The President and the Vice President are directly elected by the entire student body whereas the Treasurer and the Director of Clubs and Organizations are directly appointed by the President. Senators also serve on SG. Senate representatives from each school (e.g., College of Arts, Sciences & Letters, School of Management, Education, and Engineering) are elected by the constituents of their respective school to serve on SG. Interns, or prospective SG members, may also choose to join SG and become an integral part of the organization.
The Student Government President appoints more than 50 SG members and non-members to administrative committees and to the Academic Senate Committees. Students have an opportunity to serve on the UM-D Board of Directors and the Communications Board, as well as on other significant committees. Through their participation on these campus-wide committees, University of Michigan-Dearborn undergraduates have had input into the decision making process at a high level.
All in all, SG is dedicated to serving the students and is directly responsible for bringing their interests and concerns to the attention of the administration. Student Government is an organization that provides quality programs and services to the University of Michigan-Dearborn and the surrounding community. (From the SG website 04-02-04).
The constitution allows for the following internal committees: Appropriations, Legislative, Public Relations, Publications, Research and Development, Rules, Technology. The By-Laws provide for the Elections Committee and the procedures relating to elections.
Student Government, originally named Student Government Council, was established in 1962. The Presidents between 1962-1984 are listed below. Almost no records have been found for SG between 1963 and 1980. Further research is needed to fill in that information.
