Susan M. Steele Collection

Susan M. Steele’s gift to the Mardigian Library Juvenile Historic Collection includes a nearly complete set of the Cherry Ames series, authored by Helen Wells and Julie Tatham between 1943 and 1968.  A number of children’s series written during this time highlighted specific careers, particularly for women, and Cherry Ames is an excellent example of this genre, making this gift a wonderful addition to the collection.  Since the early titles were written during World War II, Cherry serves her country as an army, flight, and veterans’ nurse, before working in more glamorous and exciting settings, such as cruise ships and ski resorts.  Cherry was a great role model—intelligent, fun, ready for adventure, and always a professional.  Many girls were probably inspired to choose nursing as a career after reading Cherry Ames.  The books were a favorite with Ms. Steele who says her love of reading was inspired by her parents.
