Food for Fines Guidelines

Food for Fines is a food/hygiene drive running from April 1st- April 30th at the Mardigian Library. Library patrons can donate food and hygiene items in exchange for having up to $20.00 waived in library fines. This only applies for fines accumulated from items belonging to the Mardigian Library (excluding fines accumulated from MEL/ILL items, Reserves, and Lost/Damaged items). All donations will be given to the U of M Dearborn Student Food Pantry.
  • For every one food item donated, $1.00 will be waived.
  • For every one hygiene item donated, $2.00 will be waived.
  • We will accept canned/boxed food and dry goods.
  • We will accept items that have a minimum expiration date of six months. We will NOT accept food that's approaching or past its expiration date. Please check the expiration date of an item before donating.
  • We will NOT accept perishable food items (food that requires refrigeration or freezing), opened items, or items with damaged packaging.
  • There will be two boxes in front of the circulation desk where you can deposit donations. One will be designated for food items; one will be designated for hygiene items.
  • Feel free to donate items, even if you don't owe library fines!

Examples of acceptable food items: canned beans, canned fruit/ vegetables, cans of soup, cereal, macaroni and cheese, dry noodles, boxed rice, creamy peanut butter, crackers

Examples of acceptable hygiene items: shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, individually wrapped toilet paper rolls, soap, shaving cream, deodorant, feminine hygiene products
