Strategic Direction 2009-2013

The Mardigian Library is a dynamic, student-centered organization that strives to be an indispensable resource for the campus community. We work continuously to improve our ability to anticipate and meet the information needs of University of Michigan-Dearborn students and faculty members. Our services, facilities, and programs focus on supporting student learning. We allocate our resources to support achievement of the following strategic objectives:

Strategic Objectives:

  1. We will provide students access to authoritative resources that support the curriculum.
  2. Strategies:

    1. Build, maintain, and regularly evaluate our collections.
    2. Provide access to authroritative information resources through a variety of methods.
    3. Examine and assess the efficacy of the current collection development paradigm and explore alternative models.

  3. We will teach students to make effective use of information resources.
  4. Strategies:

    1. Develop and maintain a classroom research education program.
    2. Develop and maintain online tutorials and research assistance.
    3. Incorporate research education into reference service interactions.

  5. We will inform students and faculty members of the library's resources and services.
  6. Strategy:

    Communicate to the campus community the services, resources, and programs that we offer.

  7. We will develop and implement strategies and tools that engage the current generation and succeeding generations of students.
  8. Strategies:

    1. Develop the library's web site to serve student needs.
    2. Obtain information regularly about students' needs, preferences, and concerns.
    3. Create a physical environment that is a congenial and comfortable place for students to study and to gather.
    4. Create opportunities for student engagement with the library.

  9. We will be actively involved in the larger library community in ways that support the library's mission.
  10. Strategies:

    Encourage and support library staff member involvement in local, state, and national professional organizations:
    1. Provide release time for external activities.
    2. Provide financial support for external activities.
    3. Recognize and reward staff invovlement in promotion and performance review programs.

  11. We will collaborate with the University of Michigan community to support the library's and the University's missions.
  12. Strategies:

    1. Provide information that increases faculty awareness of scholarly communication issues.
    2. Foster awareness of copyright and licensing rights and responsibilities within the campus community.
    3. Support instructors and students in upholding campus academic integrity standards.
    4. Communicate effectively with the campus community and external stakeholders.
    5. The library has an active and effective external funding program.
    6. Collaborate with other university units in obtaining electronic resources.
