When we got the new III automation system in 1993, we finally had the ability to view lists of actual searches that patrons typed into the system. We cannot tell who did the search but we are able to look at searches that resulted in no retrieved titles. We regularly analyze these, looking for topics that might need a cross reference added to the catalog or when we need to order materials on a new subject. Over the years, analyzing the searches has provided me many humorous moments. The search that made me laugh out loud the most was "pregnant teenage boys". I don't know what the patron actually had in mind but we certainly didn't have any books on that topic!
