I am stunned by the university's policies regarding talking, cell phone use and the general noise level permitted in the library. Now, talking is the rule, not the exception. I have had people want to fight me when I politely asked that they either be quiet or move. Your introduction of "group study" floors has ruined a once great library. Why have group study in the library when people have a student union facility in which to talk, visit, study together and eat? How would the library staff like it if groups of people were allowed to walk into their offices and chat, eat, talk on the cell phone and gossip while the staff was trying to work? If the staff thinks its such a great idea, then perhaps they should try working in those conditions. Given the tuition costs, the university should be able to at least provide a quiet environment in the library.
If there are students who wish to group study, let them do it in the student union. You've let the foxes take over the chicken coop.
There are many times within the past year that I have left the library and gone elsewhere because the noise level was intolerable. Many of the young "kids" that frequent the library are rude, obnoxious, and immature. Most of these children are not even college students, but high schoolers? Why is that? The library used to be a place to collect yourself before an exam or do great research for a paper.
Lately, I have been coming in to gather my books and do a faster span of research, then immediately leave because I no longer have any tolerance for people who have no respect. It would be great if something could be done about this. As a student of this university who pays tuition, it should be the students, alumni, and faculty who have access.
It's pretty quiet in the library but often times there are non UM-D students on the 2nd floor. I am TIRED of people coming up to me asking, "Hi, do you have a user name we can use to log onto the Internet?" Of course I refuse them, but why are non UM-D students in our library behaving that way? It's one thing to have guests using the library's facilities, but it's another when they are bothering students that pay tuition to eventually receive the free wireless services . Some of these non students are quiet... but there are others that visit frequently and cause noise when I'm trying to study. I don't see a reason for why my friends and I should move to another floor or building because of disruption caused by non UM-D students.
I avoid the library especially on the weekends. It has become a place to socialize not study. When participating in groups I always suggest going somewhere else to study. It is very distracting, and at times offensive.
High schoolers shouldnt be able to come to our library. All they do is stare and make comments about "cute boys". They cannot handle the environment, so I think they should be banished. Most of the noise is caused by them. Furthermore, WE pay for the use of the libraries resources, they do not.
Academic success is dictated by one's willingness, hard work, and dedication to his/her academics.
The current library policies inhibit/discourage - rather than facilitate - any such willingness, hard work, and/or dedication.
Therefore, CHANGE THE DAMN POLICIES ALREADY!
