Library Director Tim Richards presented Dr. G. Frederic Bolling with the "Distinguished Faculty Library Friend" award during an honor luncheon celebration on September 28, 2007. The award recognizes faculty members who support the library's efforts to maintain a student-centered, positive learning environment and who contribute to the enhancement of library resources.
Professor Emeritus Bolling was a creative scholar and an enthusiastic, challenging and inspiring teacher. Throughout his career at UM-D, Fred exhibited a strong interest in the library and its ability to meet faculty and student needs. He also expected much from the library and our librarians because he understood that we have a vital role to play in educating students. Fred believed that librarians are important partners in teaching students not merely what information resources are available and how to use them effectively, but more importantly, that librarians can play a critical role in helping students to think critically and creatively about information and knowledge.
Because Fred expected much from the library, he also gave us much. By having high expectations of us, he stimulated, challenged and inspired us to do our best. Fred was not just a demanding partner, he was also a generous and thoughtful friend and colleague who made it clear to all librarians who worked with him that he appreciated and valued their work.
Professor Bolling is the third faculty member to be recognized by the library as a Distinguished Faculty Library Friend. Professor Lawrence Berkove and Professor Dan Moerman were recognized in 2003 and 2005, respectively.
