The Mardigian Library’s Library Research Center (LRC) has recently implemented a new text messaging reference system. With Mosio Text a Librarian, library users can use their cell phones to ask reference questions by sending text messages directly to a reference librarian.

A patron would simply send a message beginning with “Ask LRC” followed by a question to 66746 (which spells “Mosio”). For example, one might send the message, “Ask LRC What are your hours today?” If a librarian is on duty at that time, he/she will answer the question using a cell phone or computer, and a text message containing the answer will automatically be sent to the patron.

The library already answers reference questions in person and by phone, email and instant messaging. Text a Librarian provides users with an additional means of communicating with us when they are on-the-go.

The Mardigian Library is phasing out Pamphlet Course Reserves. Pamphlets that are submitted for Course Reserves between January and December 2010 will be scanned and e-mailed to you for you to load in your online course management tool.

Beginning January 2011, the library will not place Pamphlet materials on Course Reserves and will not scan documents.

Pamphlet Course Reserve materials include brief items such as book chapters, journal articles, samples tests and quizzes, solutions to problems, etc.

The library will continue to place books and audiovisual materials on Course Reserves. If you have any questions, please contact Cheryl Nevels, 313-593-5457.

Why are we making this change?
Providing pamphlet Course Reserve materials online allows students to access them at a convenient time and location and reduces or eliminates the costs of photocopying.

Faculty members have been placing fewer items on Pamphlet Course Reserves each term and fewer students have been checking out these materials.

What about copyright for materials posted in CTools?
Copyright permission needs to be obtained each semester for photocopied articles and book chapters. The library can assist you with this. Please contact Bob Fraser for additional information.

If you link directly to articles or e-books available in our databases, copyright permissions do not need to be obtained. See our directions for linking to articles using stable URLs.

Materials created by professors, such as sample tests and quizzes or problem solutions, do not require copyright permission.
