Student Satisfaction Survey Winners!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2012 Mardigian Library Student Satisfaction Survey. 748 responded to our survey. 53% of respondents were from the College of Arts Sciences & Letters, 19% from the College of Engineering & Computer Science, 17% from the College of Business, and 11% from School of Education.

We learned some intriguing details about how you and your fellow students interact with the library. You told us the ways you learn about the library are from our website, campus orientation, and friends or classmates. It was interesting to discover which devices you most frequently use to access library resources: personal computers or laptops, our computers in the library, or smartphones. Detailed results will be posted in a few months - after we analyze the feedback.

Reminder: Mardigian Library Open 24 Hours During Finals

The Mardigian Library will be open 24 hours a day for finals study beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 22 through 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 28.


Between midnight and 8:00 a.m., only University of Michigan students can enter the library and will be required to show their MCards.


Extra security personnel will be on site to monitor activity throughout the building. While the building will remain open, library services will be limited during the extra hours. All four floors of the library and the computers by the Library Research Center will be available for use, and it will also be possible to check out materials. Financial transactions, guest printing, and research assistance will not be available during extended hours.

Read More by Social Sciences Colloquium Speaker

Thaddeus Radzilowski, Lecturer in History at UM-Dearborn, will be a guest speaker at the Social Sciences Colloquium on Thursday, April 19. Dr. Radzilowski’s presentation will be “Polonia”: The Creation of an American Ethnic Group in Detroit.

Read Feudalism, Revolution, and the Meaning of Russian History: An Intellectual Biography of Nikolai Pavlovich Pavlov-Silvanskii, a book by Dr. Radzilowski in the library’s collection.

LCC & WGST Film Series Presentations

Did you miss the Department of Language, Culture, and Communication’s presentation of The Baader Meinhof Complex last week? How about the Women’s and Gender Studies presentation of Passionate Politics: The Life and Work of Charlotte Bunch? The Mardigian Library has a DVD of The Baader Meinhof Complex as well as a DVD of Passionate Politics for checkout. We also have books by and about Charlotte Bunch.

School of Education Research Colloquium Speakers

Edward Silver (SOE Dean at UM-Dearborn) and Crystal Lumsford (SOE Lecturer) will be guest speakers at the School of Education Research Colloquium on Thursday, April 12. Their presentation will be Making Scholarship Useable in Education: Examining the Role of Practitioner Journals.

Read books by Professor Silver in the library’s collection and his articles through the Scopus database. To read articles, click on "View at publisher" or "Article Linker.” Full text of all papers may not be available.

Reminder: Fantasy Author Saladin Ahmed to Visit Library

Join us as fantasy author Saladin Ahmed discusses his debut novel Throne of the Crescent Moon. Throne is one of the year's most anticipated fantasy novels and is reminiscent of The Arabian Nights. Ahmed will bring his novel to life through discussion of its images of Arab folklore.

Ahmed's short stories have been nominated for several writing awards and have been translated into five languages. His previous writings have appeared in numerous literary magazines and anthologies.

Ahmed will be selling and signing his debut novel.

The Mardigian Library has VHS copies of the movie available that can be borrowed. Don’t have a VCR to play a VHS tape? The library has several—just ask at the Circulation Desk.
