The Battle of Stoney Creek was fought on June 6, 1813 during the War of 1812. The library has about 1,000 books, e-books, and online documents covering the War of 1812. While many of those books and e-books mention the Battle of Stoney Creek, none are specifically about the battle.

A reenactment of the Battle of Stoney Creek was held this past weekend at Battlefield House Museum & Park in Stoney Creek, Ontario (on the western shore of Lake Ontario). But, there will be more War of 1812 events around Hamilton, Ontario (near Stoney Creek and about 3 1/2 hours from Dearborn). City of Dearborn blood drive

The City of Dearborn will be hosting a blood drive next Monday, June 17 at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center. Everyone who comes will be entered in a drawing to win a Detroit Tigers Family 4-Pack.

If you are a pre-med student, you might be interested to know that the library has many books about blood transfusions, blood diseases, etc. We also have many journals that cover blood-related topics.

Summer off-campus database access (403 error)

Are you getting a 403 error when you try to access online databases, journals, or e-books? This normally happens when you try to access them through our website, but are not registered for the current semester. The vendors for our research databases do not allow off-campus access to students who are not registered for the current semester.

If you are not registered for a class during the spring/summer semester, you have two options:
1. Access a research database through MeL. Look for a purple next to the database name on our website. Click on the purple instead of the database name. These databases are available to residents of Michigan — you will need to log in using your Michigan driver’s license number. (You can also go directly to MeL Databases to access these.)
2. You can come in to the library and use guest access computers.

Butterflies - Day 18 (We have butterflies!)

Sometime over the weekend, butterflies emerged from their cocoons. I missed it. Did anyone see the butterflies emerging? Did you see them drying their wings? If so, when did it occur?

I saw three butterflies in the flight cage. Can you see three in the picture?

We are hoping to release the butterflies on Wednesday at noon, weather permitting. Watch our blog for details.

On this date in 1963, the James Bond movie Dr. No was released. This was the first James Bond movie starring Sean Connery.

The Mardigian Library does not have a copy of Dr. No, but you can order both the movie and the book the movie was based on -- and many other movies and books -- through MeLCat.

Butterflies - Day 13

We've moved the chrysalises to the flight cage, where they will remain until they become butterflies. We're expecting butterflies to emerge sometime between Friday and Monday.

Students, remember that you can win a $25 gift certificate for Club Cappuccino by entering our butterfly trivia contest. Entry forms are available online and on top of the display case; all answers can be found within the display. Entries must be returned to the box at the Circulation Desk or submitted online by May 30. The winner will be chosen at random from among all the entries with the most correct answers.

Butterflies - Day 11

All five of our caterpillars are now pupae (or chrysalises). Soon, we will move the chrysalises to the flight cage and they will remain in the flight cage until they become butterflies. We expect to have butterflies sometime between Friday and Monday.

Caterpillars - Day 8 (afternoon)

The metamorphosis has started - the caterpillars are becoming pupae (or chrysalises). The one in front has nearly completed this transformation. There is still one caterpillar in the back that hasn't started. Early next week, we will move the chrysalises to the flight cage (on the right of the picture), where they will remain for another 6 days or so until they become butterflies.

Three of the caterpillars have attached themselves to the lid and it looks like a fourth is getting ready to do so!

Caterpillars - Day 7 (afternoon)

Most of the caterpillars are spending their time at the top of the container. They will attach to a piece of paper at the top to become a pupa. Hopefully, we'll be able to get pictures of the process. Since we are closed this weekend, hopefully they'll cooperate and pupate tomorrow!
