Butterflies - Day 13

We've moved the chrysalises to the flight cage, where they will remain until they become butterflies. We're expecting butterflies to emerge sometime between Friday and Monday.

Students, remember that you can win a $25 gift certificate for Club Cappuccino by entering our butterfly trivia contest. Entry forms are available online and on top of the display case; all answers can be found within the display. Entries must be returned to the box at the Circulation Desk or submitted online by May 30. The winner will be chosen at random from among all the entries with the most correct answers.

Caterpillars are here!

If you can, come in to the library during break week to see our caterpillars grow. But, if you can't make it, check out our blog for pictures; we'll post new pictures once or twice a day so you can see them grow. Our caterpillars arrived Friday. Wow, they have grown so much already!

Butterflies are coming to the library and you can win!

Live caterpillars are scheduled to arrive at the library during the week of April 22. Visitors will be able to watch the caterpillars transform into butterflies as part of a new display on the first floor called “Believe in Butterflies.” The display features fiction and nonfiction books about butterflies from our collection.

Mardigian Library open 24 hours during finals

The Mardigian Library hours for finals study will be:
Friday, April 19 — 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 20 — 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Sunday, April 21 — 8:00 a.m. - [no closing time]
April 22 - 26 — open 24 hours
Saturday, April 27 — open until 7:30 p.m.

Between midnight and 8:00 a.m., only University of Michigan students can enter the library and you be required to show your MCard.

Extra security personnel will be on site to monitor activity throughout the building. While the building will remain open, library services will be limited during the extra hours. All four floors of the library and the computers by the Library Research Center will be available for use, and it will also be possible to check out materials. Research assistance, guest printing, and financial transactions, including adding money to printing accounts will not be available during extended hours.

Video equipment available for checkout

Need to make a video for a class project and don’t have the equipment? The library has a solution for you. Kodak Playtouch digicams are available for checkout at the library’s Circulation Desk.

The Playtouch is the size and shape of a smartphone and will take HD videos in 1080p resolution. One-touch uploading provides easy sharing through e-mail, YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, and other sites. You may also connect the Playtouch to your computer and transfer the files. If you want to edit the video, the library’s Campus Media Services has a multimedia editing room for student and faculty use. The editing room is equipped with the best audio and video editing software, including Avid, Final Cut Pro, and the suite of Adobe and Microsoft applications.

Digicams have a three-day checkout period and each comes in a carry bag with an extra battery, an external microphone, connecting and charging wires, and the manual. Ask for one at the library’s Circulation Desk!

So You Want to Show a Library Video...

All videos in the Mardigian Library collection can be shown in the classroom to the registered students of a course for purposes that support that course's learning outcomes. In addition to these classroom rights, the Mardigian Library has secured non-commercial public performance rights for some videos. This list of movies can be shown at meetings of student groups or honors colloquia, for example, as long as there is no charge for the showing. For information about securing the performance rights for a movie for which we don’t have public performance rights, see the Campus Policy for Commercial Videos.

Library Survey

Academic libraries all over the world are changing to meet the expectations of current and future students. Changes are needed at the Mardigian Library and we want to hear from you. The "book warehouse" is going away and in its place is emerging a comfortable, active, high-tech campus learning commons. We need to know what types of learning spaces, technologies, and services would make the library a more friendly and relevant place for you to gather and study.

Please fill out this brief survey and share your thoughts by January 31, 2013.

If you would rather share your ideas in person, contact Barbara Kriigel. She will be scheduling student focus groups later in the semester.

Brothers Grimm Contest Winner

Open Research Workshops

The Library Research Center will be holding several open research workshops during the winter term.

Topics will include:
*Discovering what is new in the library
*How to conduct more effective research

You will also be able to ask topical questions related to your current research assignments.

Brothers Grimm Contest Ends Today!

Welcome back students! The library is now part of the campus-wide "Uprint" print quota of 500 pages per student per semester. Uprint is maintained by ITS, so students who have problems will need to contact the ITS helpdesk for assistance with their print accounts. On This Date 150 Years Ago...

Most of us know about persecution of Jews during World War II. You might know that Jews have been persecuted in Europe for centuries. But, how much do you know about anti-Semitism during the American Civil War? On December 17, 1862, Major General Ulysses S. Grant, before he became Lieutenant General and commander of all Union armies, issued General Order No. 11. This order expelled all Jews from the military district under Grant's command: parts of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi. Was it Grant's intention to expel all Jews or just Jewish speculators in black market cotton? The order said one thing and Grant seems to have always claimed the other. Check the newspaper, magazine, and journal articles in ProQuest and decide for yourself.
