80th Anniversary of the Song "Precious Lord"

The University of Michigan - Dearborn will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the song "Precious Lord" on Wednesday, March 6. There will be a keynote presentation facilitated by Dr. Tammy Kernodle, Associate Professor of Musicology at Miami University, along with other special invited guests.

Library Exhibit

The Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive and the Mardigian Library at the University of Michigan-Dearborn are co-sponsoring the traveling exhibit “Architecture of Murder: The Auschwitz-Birkenau Blueprints.” The exhibit features photographs, documents, text panels, and blueprints of the camp that document both its development and expansion. There is also poetry by Paul Celan and a short audiovisual presentation. All materials are on loan from the American Society for Yad Vashem.

The exhibit runs through Feb. 22, 2013 and will feature a closing ceremony on Feb. 24 with a discussion of both the camp and the exhibit by award winning author Robert van Pelt, Professor of Architecture at the University of Waterloo. Van Pelt’s presentation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on the second floor of the library. (Due to the university's spring break, the library will only be open from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Feb. 24 for this event.) Light refreshments will be served.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Free parking is available.

New Exhibits in the Library

Display cases: Check out the new exhibit Survival of the Spirit: Art Inspired by the Holocaust. This exhibit is in the display cases on the first floor by the elevator.

Second floor: See the traveling exhibit Architecture of Murder: The Auschwitz-Birkenau Blueprints. This exhibit will be on display until February 24.
Opening Reception will be on January 20 at 1:00 p.m.
Closing presentation by award-winning author Professor Robert Jan van Pelt will be held on February 24 at 2:00 p.m.
All events are free and open to the public, but please RSVP for the opening reception and the closing presentation (holocaust@umd.umich.edu or 313.583.6300).

Holocaust Memoir Published by the Voice/Vision Archive and UM-Dearborn

The Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive recently worked with Irene Miller to publish her Holocaust memoir, “Into No Man’s Land: A Historical Memoir.” Ms. Miller recounts her family’s efforts to survive during World War II. Robbed and stranded in a frozen field outside Warsaw by the man hired to help them escape to Soviet-occupied territory, the family must separate in order to cross the border. When Irene’s mother is rounded up with other families abandoned in the field, she must make a desperate and daring escape from the train of Jews being sent “who knows where.” The family is reunited, but then is shipped off to forced labor camps in Siberia where years of hard work and near starvation take a toll on the family.

Miller will be a highlighted local author at the Jewish Book Fair at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield on Sunday, November 18 (10 a.m. to noon).

Do you enjoy reading and discussing interesting books? Join the Read, Eat, and Discuss (R.E.A.D.) group that meets several times a year in the Mardigian Library.

Below is a list of the books we are reading this year and the dates we will discuss them. The library will have copies of all the titles, both in print and on our Kindles.

The title for the first book discussion on October 30 is In the Garden of Beasts. Both print and Kindle versions are available in the library.

Reminder: Fantasy Author Saladin Ahmed to Visit Library

Join us as fantasy author Saladin Ahmed discusses his debut novel Throne of the Crescent Moon. Throne is one of the year's most anticipated fantasy novels and is reminiscent of The Arabian Nights. Ahmed will bring his novel to life through discussion of its images of Arab folklore.

Ahmed's short stories have been nominated for several writing awards and have been translated into five languages. His previous writings have appeared in numerous literary magazines and anthologies.

Library & Voice/Vision Archive Cosponsoring Musical Performances

On Thursday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m., the Mardigian Library and the Holocaust Memorial Center are cosponsoring a performance by Ethan Bortnick. Only 11 years old, Ethan Bortnick already has made history as the youngest musician, composer, and entertainer to headline a concert tour. He has shared the stage with Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, the Black Eyed Peas, Beyoncé, and Justin Bieber. Ethan also stars in, and wrote the music for, the film Anything is Possible, to be released later this year.

On Saturday, March 24, at 8:30 p.m., the Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive, along with the Jewish Gay Network, is co-sponsoring an evening with Detroit’s own Don Was. As half of the satiric R & B duo Was (Not Was), Don became one of the most prolific and sought-after producers in contemporary music. He has produced such legendary artists as Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Glenn Frey, Iggy Pop, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Seger, and the B-52s. In 1995, he received a Grammy Award for Producer of the Year.

The evening will be hosted by award-winning music journalist Gary Graff and will feature a discussion and a musical performance focusing on the producer’s extraordinary career.

Both musical performances are part of the Jewish Community Center’s Stephen Gottlieb Music Festival (running from March 15 through March 25, 2012). Both events sponsored by the Mardigian Library and Voice-Vision Archive will be held at The Berman Center for the Performing Arts on the West Bloomfield campus of the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit.

Library to Host Genealogy 101 Workshop

Learn how to uncover your family's history and search for missing branches in your family tree by attending the Genealogy 101 Workshop. Joseph Marks, a founding member of the Polish Genealogical Society, will provide an overview of genealogical research. Topics will include some of the genealogical databases available and how to work with census, birth, death, and military resourds. There will also be a question and answer period after the presentation.
