The campus will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary during the 2009-2010 academic year. We plan to join the party by hosting a “Library Alumni Open House” October 16th from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The library has employed hundreds of students over the years. Student Assistants perform many essential functions: processing materials to be “shelf ready,” shelving books, staffing the Circulation Desk so that their fellow students borrow materials, and providing reference assistance under the guidance of reference librarians. In short, Student Assistants are crucial to the library’s ability to serve the campus. We literally could not function without them. In fact, when our staff members are at meetings and someone asks, “Who is running the library?” we always answer, “The students, of course!!”
We are trying to locate ALL former library Student Assistants so that we can invite everyone who has ever worked at the library. If you are a former library Student Assistant, please be sure that we have your contact information so that we can invite you to the party. If you know others who worked in the library during their student days, please share their contact information with us so that we can invite them to the party and encourage them to come. It will be wonderful to see “old friends” and to catch up! Please send contact information to:
sasbury@umd.umich.edu or call 313-593-5236.
She was SO studious, which I observed as I staffed the check out desk and shelved books.
We are still married 40 years later.
She was working behind the desk and I walked into the library with a paper cup full of water. If you recall there was a sign posted on the door that said: "NO BEVERAGES ALLOWED IN THE LIBRARY."
She said to me as I tried to breeze by: "Excuse me, but no beverages in the library."
I informed her that it was water, and that water is not a beverage.
I continued to walk down the stacks and hid to see if she would go up to the large Webster dictionary sitting on the podium to look up the definition of "beverage." She sure did!
Beverage: any potable liquid, esp. one other than water, as tea, coffee, beer, or milk.
Later she admitted telling a coworker, "He is cute, but what a smarty pants!”
This August we will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary.
She went on to become a librarian and myself an engineer.
Why does this feel like, "When Harry met Sally"?
Take care,
Roman Beyer + Joanna Steinke
We do plan to invite former staff members too. It should be a fun event!
I love your story! And the funny thing is that now beverages (and food!) are allowed in the library! You might never have met your future husband if the rules had been different!
I loved that she used a reference resource to deal with a behavior issue! You guys have a great story, and could easily have been one of the couples "interviewed" during the Sally/Harry movie! I look forward to meeting you at the reunion!
