Landscape Study
1975
Blown glass
Gift of Bernice and Martin Marx in memory of their son Jamie, 1995.058
This tall vessel has a wide band of black that wraps around the middle, and it is framed by white borders above and below. At the center, a ribbon of bright green with blueish tinges dips and rises as it encircles the vessel. Two large dots are positioned in the white border on one side, and then on the opposite side, a single dot is added. The design is non-pictorial, but the artist added an inscription on the bottom of the vessel: "Landscape Study / 1975." Now we wonder if the undulating upper edge of the dark form could be the silhouette of distant hills. The orbs overhead might be the sun or moon. Is the swath of green a forest or a stream? Huchthausen's landscape study allows for many interpretations.
David Huchthausen is considered a major figure in the studio glass movement that started in the early 1960s. He received his MA from the University of Wisconsin and a MFA from Illinois State University where he went on to direct the glass program from 1976 to 1977. Huchthausen's work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
