Picturing Places and Spaces

January 20 – April 1, 2022

City Spaces

The energy of city spaces is captured by African American artist Jacob Lawrence in his large print of workers constructing a building as others rush past almost in their own worlds. Another African American artist, Romare Bearden, created a watercolor of multi-storied buildings in the New York skyline, and as did Russian-born American artist, Helen Gerardia, although their styles are entirely different. The contributions of African Americans and immigrants are underscored in these works that call attention to the humanity of spaces in a large city.
