Picturing Places and Spaces

January 20 – April 1, 2022

Restless Places

Transformation of place is clear in this group of images that focuses on the elements of nature: earth, water, fire, and wind. Michigan artists Electra Stamelos and Donald Cronkhite both depict clouds but under vastly different conditions. Mexican artist, David Alfaro Siqueiros, created a lithographic portfolio titled Mountain Suite. In two prints from the series, volcanic activity changes the landscape in front of our eyes. These works are about the power of nature and its potential not only to create awe-inspiring views, but also to alter forever ones that were previously familiar.
