Need to Know Before You Borrow

Borrowing Methods

What if the Mardigian Library doesn't have the resource I need? You can request items from other libraries using the library's following three loan services. There are no fees for UM-Dearborn students, faculty, or staff to place these requests.

1. Get This - Borrow from other University of Michigan Campuses (Fastest)

   First, check the UM Ann Arbor catalog and use Get This, to request books and other media from UM-Ann Arbor and UM-Flint to be delivered to the Mardigian Library.

   • Get This Request Books

     You can request books from other Umich libraries using the library's interlibrary loan services. There are no fees for UM-Dearborn students, faculty, or staff to place these requests.

     Current UM-Dearborn students, faculty and staff can request items from the UM-Ann Arbor and UM-Flint libraries, and have them delivered to the Dearborn library by using the MLibrary catalog. To use Get This, following the instructions on our page.

   • Get This Renewal
     You can find complete instructions on renewing items that you borrowed from Ann Arbor libraries on the Mardigian Library's website.

   *UM-Dearborn students, faculty, and staff can also borrow items by visiting Other University of Michigan Libraries in person.

2. MeLCAT - Borrow from other libraries in Michigan (Moderate)

   Second, try MeLCAT, the Michigan eLibrary, a 24/7 online library for Michigan residents. MelCAT allows you to order books, audio books, music, movies, and other materials and have them delivered to the Mardigian Library.

     You can request books from MeLCAT using the library's interlibrary loan services. There are no fees for UM-Dearborn students, faculty, or staff to place these requests.

     You can request books by going to MeLCAT and enter the title, author, or keywords in the MeLCat Search box on the homepage. To order books and other materials through MeLCat, follow these instructions on the MeLCat website.

     Library users who belong to a MelCat library can:

     1. Search for books, CD's, and DVD's from libraries across the state of Michigan.
     2. Request materials be delivered to the Mardigian Library.
     3. Checkout books in person at select "Visiting Patron" libraries.

     MeLCat items requested at UM-Dearborn may only be picked up and returned at the Mardigian Library.

   • MeLCAT Request AVs

     You can request audiovisual (AV) materials such as DVDs or CDs from MeLCat using the library's interlibrary loan services. There are no fees for UM-Dearborn students, faculty, or staff to place these requests.

     Library users who belong to a MelCat library can:

     1. Search for books, CD's, and DVD's from libraries across the state of Michigan.
     2. Request materials be delivered to the Mardigian Library.
     3. Checkout books in person at select "Visiting Patron" libraries.

     MeLCat items requested at UM-Dearborn may only be picked up and returned at the Mardigian Library.

     Renew through your Library Account or call 313-593-5559
     Books - 1 Renewal for 3 Weeks
     DVDs, CDs - No Renewals
     You cannot renew items that are:

     • On hold for another person
     • Already have been renewed once

     Overdue MelCat Items
     

     Overdue MeLCat items are charged a $0.25 fine for every day overdue for the first 8 days. Once an item is 8 days overdue, the item is charged $5 per day for every day overdue. Fines are cumulative.

3. Interlibrary Loan (ILL) - Borrow from other libraries across the world (Slowest)

   Third, use Interlibrary Loan (ILL) to find books, dissertations, microforms, or periodical articles.

   • Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Renewal
     Renew requests through the "Checked Out Items" menu in Illiad.
     Click on the transaction number in order to see your renewal options.
     You can renew 5 days before the due date.
     You are granted a temporary new due date while ILL negotiates the due date with the owning library.

     Overdue Illiad Items
     

     Illiad Borrowing privileges will be suspended if an item is 14 days or more beyond its due date or if a recalled item is one or more days overdue. MLibrary borrowing privileges will be suspended if an item is 30 days or more beyond its due date. Privileges will be restored when the overdue item has been returned.
